Copying (or stealing in some cases) the work of other artists probably happens more frequently than we realize. I don't know if you could call much of it "stealing" though because there are many people out there who have been heavily "influenced" by the music of others.

So now I submit to you that the music of the Beatles has managed to breech many creative boundaries. Here is an example of how a part of "Birthday" found it's way into "Rock This Country" by Shania Twain. Each clip is about 30 seconds long and the comparison begins at about 13 seconds into each one.

Do you think that Macca, Yoko, or Sony Music Group, or even the RAII, ASCAP, or the AP, UPI, and anyone else who gives two rips about something like this have gone after Shania Twain?? I don't think so...and the fact that Shania's husband & producer (Mutt Lang) happens to be a major producer of some major Classic Rock Bands probably doesn't hurt in a situation like this...hehe.

Anyone recall the lawsuit over/between George Harrison's My Sweet Lord and The Chiffons He's so Fine songs?

Now, I can understand that some songs can sound alike using basic music formula's like C-F-G and such but some artists and groups take that too far.

Also, I don't know if you're all aware about all the ripoffs Zeppelin did, but check out Wikipedia on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Led_Zeppelin Scroll down to Allegations of plagiarism.

I wouldn't have believed how much music Zeppelin had stolen and put their own names on until I was listening to Howard Stern one morning on Sirius and they began playing the songs side by side with their originals. It's disgusting. I was (and still am actually) a huge Zep fan but the extent of their plagiarism is inexcusable no matter how good a job they did on the songs.

I can understand inspiration, but many of their songs were almost completely stolen. I was shocked.

After all....how many variations can you make on a 1-4-5 theme. People are bound to start pissing on each other eventually :)
