Hey guys,

I'd previously asked on my brother's behalf about ELP guitar tabs. Since then, he's rather surprised me - having gotten back into music in a MUCH more major way than I realized. Exhibit A? Check-out his guitar collection:

From L-R, he's got a '77 Guild D-55, a 70-75 (he's still trying to pin that down) Gibson Les Paul Standard, a Peter Frampton signature Les Paul, an '07 Rodriguez Classical, an '07 Yamaha Silent Nylon String, and a Giannini Classical. He also tells me he's bought a couple of effects pedals and is taking his first baby steps with Apple Garageband.

Besides sharing his stuff (which, if that were the only topic I would've put in the guitar forum) I also wanted to beg a favor. As you know, I'm a Luddite where recording technology / techniques are concerned (rationalizing it away that learning how to use my keyboards is enough of a task!). I wonder if you guys would mind providing URLs that you find helpful - be they discussion forums or just other music-oriented pages. I'll then amass the list and email them to him (along with the URL here, in hopes he'll join).

As always, 'preciate it!

:boobies:
(closing in honor of my impending trip up to Glamourcon in Chicago - lol)

I am not a tab-user...and there are plenty of guitar forums out there. I have yet to find one that has proven to very helpful in terms of learning to play, or techniques...for me personally that is. I belong to the Hamer Fan Club forum which has taught me a shitload about Hamer guitars...but again, really nothing along the lines of playing.

However, I DO belong to a forum called ActoGuitar which I think may be a good resource...I have not delved into it much myself, primarily because I'm busy enough with plenty of other things, but you might pass this link along and tell your brother to join up and peruse their site.

To be honest, I get a heck of a lot just out of participating with EMP. I was out of the electric guitar business for the better part of 30 years (1975 thru 2004)...I sold off my electric rig to get married to my first wife...dumbest move of my entire life. I had a Les Paul gold top. Then my wonderful wife Tess decided to get me back into it...and having been away from it for so long I was a bit leery that I would be able to do it. I wasn't really all that good on electric before. But after I got another electric guitar, there was a floodgate of tunes that just seemed to jump right out of me that I had never even attempted to play before (Whiskey Train being the first). But working on some of the projects EMP has been doing has had a certain amount of "stretching" effect on my playing as I have played a few songs with you guys that I have never actually played before. I NEVER played any Genesis or Phil Collins...and believe it or not, the bits I've played on the two Beatles songs we have done to this point were actually new to me for playing purposes...

So I would imagine that your brother will probably have no trouble getting back on that bicycle...especially if someone like ME can do it. Your brother has some great guitars there.

He can date that Les Paul on the internet...google Gibson Guitars Serial Number Search or something of that nature. Prior to 1977 the serial numbers would tell the date and location and guitar number for that year, but they've changed it up some. Here is a link to a .pdf file for Gibson Serials that may be helpful...

I don't know why the forum truncated that link...but it's gibson.com/Files/downloads/bluebook/GibsonSERIALNUMBERS.pdf

thanks, larry. i'm not sure he's so much looking for tabs anymore as he's now wanting to educate himself about the basics of the digital recording studio. i directed him to homerecording.com - it's more sites like that which i believe are of interest.
