Since Graham brought-up my plans in the other post, I thought I might start a dedicated thread on the topic.
As you're aware, I've listed my home in SW FL for sale, with the intention of relo'ing to the Los Angeles area. One of the things I want to do when I'm settled there is build a soundproofed backyard practice studio. Here's my latest design (I word it that way because this is about the 7th or 8th version I've done):

The basic idea (as of this iteration) is to take a 15'x20' poured concrete slab and erect a concrete-block building of the same size (with sand poured into the blocks to further help with sound abatement). After insulating the pitched roof and adding two layers of 5/8" drywall I'll then build the room-within-the-room as drawn (air separation between the framed and concrete walls, with fiberglass insulation and two layers of 5/8" drywall sandwiching a 1/2" celotex layer to help contain the sound). Finish with a thick pad and carpet over the slab plus traps as needed, and - if done right - it should be very quiet (which I'm sure the neighbors will appreciate).
I emphasize that my intent is for practice as opposed to a pure recording studio (hence why there is one big room instead of traditional two-room recording setup) - as that's more how I visualize its use (mainly for me and my keyboards, but with enough room to include a drummer, a couple of guitarists, and perhaps one-or-two others as needed).
And since I have a serious looker (that I hope will become a buyer in the next 7-10 days) maybe I'll be able to break-ground sometime this year. Will keep you posted!
David
p.s. For anybody contemplating doing something similar, there are two really great books to be had - 'Home Recording Studio - Build It Like the Pros" by Rod Gervais and 'building a recording studio" by Jeff Cooper. That, and help you can get at the forum of johnlsayers.com and you're in business!
