Hi Mark.
I've explained my interpretation of why the peaks are there in the separate email (basic rush job!!), but would appreciate a swap of ideas / techniques on this subject if you're up for it?
I'd normally go for recording the vocal 'as is' without applying any effects to the track at that time. I could apply effects via the desk as I record, but haven't been tempted to do so as yet - I reserve this for treating (say!) guitar as I'm messing about with arrangements etc.
With having limited off-board hardware effects available, I normally then apply plug-in effects to the tracks selectively as required, although I do have a couple of additional plug-ins to hand.
Up till now I've been using the standard Cakewalk FX range, coupled with the Sony ExpressFX range introduced via the Sound Forge software. I'd appreciate any comments you have on these, as I realise the use of 'standard' plug-in's will not always bring about the best results, although I suppose many times it just comes down to the comfort factor of 'what you're used to' in most cases. The plug-ins you mention sound great....If you can point me in the direction of a PC version I'll certainly give it a try.
Take care - G.

You are doing exactly what Im doing. Record everything clean and add effects later. Up until now I have been adding effects via DXI/VST stuff. I'm just now starting to play the clean tracks from my computer back into my mixer, effecting externally and recording back into sonar simultaneously.
Thats why I built the preamp, quadrafuzz and Stak-In-A-Box.
I also want to apply the tube preamp while recording the clean track. eg. plug the bass or guitar into the preamp and then into the board for recording.
What I really, really, really want badly is a good stand alone tube compressor. I have been searching the internet for a good schematic. I may actually attempt to scratch build one because I cant find a kit anywhere.
