Back in the 70's, Al and I got to catch Buddy Rich live at an extremely small venue in NYC once (a restaurant). It was a private affair, I don't recall how we got passes, there couldn't have been more then 30 people in attendance. But he was a cold and rude little prick. I always hoped that we just caught him on a bad night. I think Al was a little crushed, he always held Rich in such high esteem.

Unfortunately Tracy, I don't think that was uncommon. I've heard many people say the same thing.
Cool that you got to see him perform in such an intimate setting though.

That doesn't surprise me at all. He was a real dick that night. It's just so sad that such a talant is such a prick. We expected more from him. It was a real dissapointment.
I can't speak for Al, but I lost all respect for Rich that night. He was a total dickhead.

Don't mince words, Tracy. Tell us how you REALLY feel. haha. ;)
Fortunately Carl didn't learn that from him too.

Indeed Mark... when I met up with Carl after the gig at the Cavern in Liverpool, I stepped forward to ask him for his autograph but must have done it with a little too much enthusiasm... Carl leaned away from me and quickly said "Hey man...just give me a bit of breathing space....just played a gig you know?"
I pulled away at once and he signed my ticket and chatted a bit about the gig... he was a little frustrated by the lighting in the venue, but otherwise felt it went okay.
From what you're saying I've a feeling that if I had done the same to Buddy, I might have received a smack in the mouth...!
