No...I am not referring to the "still-pending" EMP project of the Phil Collins song. :)

Several months ago my son, Ian, left me a message saying that he had become involved with a group of guys up in Washington and they were writing songs and recording them. I sort of thought to myself that it was pretty cool, but I had no idea how these guys would sound. Ian is a Sergeant in the Infantry stationed at Fort Lewis, WA. To my knowledge, particularly since he and his wife split up about 3 years ago, he did not have his drums with him so he could maintain his edge. In fact, the army had been keeping him very busy with numerous training events (airborne training, etc.) and an extended tour in Korea, and I figured he would have no time for drums at all.

I recently received a message from Ian on myspace with a link to his band's myspace page. They are calling themselves Against All Odds.

I cannot tell you how I welled-up inside the first time I listened to their 4 tunes on myspace. Ian has turned into an absolutely incredible drummer! Their musical genre isn't exactly my cup o' tea, but man these kids are tight! LOL, kids...Ian is 30. HAHAHA. Still MY kid though ;)

You sort of have to put a filter on the vocalizings...I have never cared much for those demonic growling/screaming/yelling kind of vocals. Ian can sing really well when he does it...fortunately he is not the lead vocalist and he does add vocals to their songs which soften it up a bit. He is providing most of the non-growling/screaming vocals...but then he adds a couple here and there as well....LOL.

The really sad thing for me personally is that Ian is deploying to Afghanistan at the end of this month...for how long it is unclear. So this is a two-edged sword for me...as a fan of my kid I really hate to see him have to give up something that really seems to be working for him. As his dad, I am obviously jittery about him going to Afghanistan, but all of us who have ever served know that it is just part of life for a soldier. The amazing thing to me is that this will be his first deployment and he's been on active duty since 2003. All those training courses and the extended stay in Korea prevented him from going to Iraq, or Afghanistan previously. If you are the praying type, kindly keep my boy Ian in your prayers and I will be eternally grateful.

Hope you guys will check these kids out. You may feel like going out and having a case of road rage after you listen to them though...HAHAHA. JUST KIDDING.

Hi Larry.... I certainly will take a listen when I can (...currently sitting on a train to London!)... and will keep him in mind during his tour of duty. Cheers - G.

Larry, Ian will be in my heart and thoughts. And speaking of 'Against All Odds", my son Jason is in the Air Force and is currently deployed at Osan, Korea :)

Im sorry I missed this post man. Holy crap...I had no idea you has a son that age. I will surely listen to the myspace page. I guess music runs in the family.

Im sorry to hear that they are carting him off to that god forsaken place. I guess knowing that he is over there will drive you insane every day. if he is anything like you he is sharp as a tack and he will do fine. I'll be on the sidelines praying for you.
