Although I have always admired his playing very much, I have never actually been a huge fan of Yngwie Malmsteen. This, probably more than anything, is because I could NEVER play any of his music myself. I do not possess the hand-eye coordination, nor the chops, to do most of the things he can do with a guitar...which are absolutely incredible. I DO envy his abilities though.
Today I became a big fan of Yngwie Malmsteen the PERSON. His playing speaks for itself, but to learn that he literally left everything behind in Sweden to come to the USA to realize his own dream of being a professional musician, and to hear him say what he says about how great the USA is...well, that was really a spot of refreshment and I wish more people in the USA could hear this message. People in our country give the subject of sacrifice a lot of lip-service, yet I have to think that they are clueless about the true meaning of the word. To so many, doing without an X-box is a major sacrifice. How about you try leaving your family, along with all of your worldly possessions, to go to a country that is half-way around the world from your homeland and try to have even the smallest measure of success?
I have a whole new level of respect for Yngwie now. Guts and committment...two attributes that seem to be rare commodities with your average Joe these days. It makes you wonder if there will ever come a day when people will wake up and realize that NOTHING really GOOD comes to us unless we are truly willing to literally pour ourselves into it...instead of expecting someone else to come along and just hand it over to us...like the govenment wants us all to think? LOL.
